Transforming an $8.00 Thrifted Desk!
Hi everyone, we are taking a trip down memory lane today with photos and video clips that I have had in my camera roll. This project is authored from my sister's perspective, we often do projects together and this one she did by herself after moving away, while I helped via Facetime and text. Enjoy!
Today I am going to show you how I took this cheap, sad looking Goodwill desk and transformed it into something beautiful & functional that is now used for hours on end. I used Fusion Mineral Paint and Rustoleum Universal spray paint to give this little desk a major makeover! (not sponsored)
In the summer of 2019 I found a small desk at the local thrift store that was priced at only $7.50 (Canadian). I knew I needed a desk for the new house I was moving to, and it had the right shape but was in terrible condition with faded black paint and several dents in the wood. Before I could complete the project, it was time for me to move to a different province so -to the great chagrin of those who helped me move all my belongings- I transported the rather sad looking desk with me!
I sanded the desk before moving, but ran out of time to finish it here. The project was put on hold for a few days while we got settled and started classes. Then I filled in the dents in the wood with wood filler and used Fusion Mineral Paint in Bayberry to give the desk new life. After a couple long days of classes, some admittedly aggressive rolling is just the therapy I needed. We love FMP because it is so pigmented and provides great colour coverage, as well it has a built in base coat & top coat so it decreases the amount of work and coats you have to do on a project.
It took a couple coats of paint as the wood was extremely dry (if I had a do-over, I would condition or prime the wood first). I love Fusion Mineral Paint for the durable finish it provides! The desk front was missing a piece of trim, so I picked up a short section of intricate ceiling moulding that I thought matched the aesthetic, painted it to match, and secured it with wood glue.
I spray painted the original handles in Rustoleum's Antique Brass, and thrifted a brass chair off the Facebook marketplace to match. I added faux fur to the chair cushion, and my project was done!
And that is how I transformed this sad little desk into a beautiful and functional piece that I now use (and love!) every single day for hours on end. I love the rich colour and use this desk every day as I now study and work from home exclusively due to COVID-19. It has now been a year and a half since finishing this project and the paint has held up perfectly - I would highly recommend!
